    About This Event

A play that searches for tenderness amid the whirl and absurdity of war

Antilógos Theatre presents the play by Palestinian writer Dalia Taha, KEFFIYEH/MADE IN CHINA, shown for the first time in the Greek language, directed by Eleni Anastasiou. Dalia Taha constructs a collage of human stories, a linked work of short vignettes covering all stages of life in a war zone. Heartbreaking, at times humorous, everyday moments in which ordinary people face decades of oppression, displacement and attempts at annihilation.

A mother and a father, despite their financial hardship, buy mangoes for their son. A newlywed couple stands in line to pass a checkpoint. An older revolutionary admonishes a young soldier about his role. A couple seeks intimacy one night without the children. A local small-business owner tries to sell a scarf as a fashion product to a young socially conscious tourist. Two young people talk about their encounter that was captured by a viral video of an execution. Parents discuss decorating a child’s room in a destroyed city.

This play premiered at the Royal Flemish Theatre in Brussels in 2012 and then toured Palestinian towns in the West Bank. The author is known for her moving theatrical works that delve into the daily lives of people in conflict zones, particularly in Palestine. Her works penetrate feeling and its intensity, thereby conveying the human experience of siege, war and extermination. At the same time she illuminates the historical and everyday aspect of the Palestinian issue, which is a timeless and systemic problem that today takes on other dimensions, those of extermination and genocide.

The performance will include surtitles and interpretation into sign language to be accessible to people with hearing disabilities, and in collaboration with the School for the Blind equal access for people with visual impairments will be ensured.
