We often think a strong photograph is a “rare moment” or a big event.
But in contemporary photography it’s often the opposite: strength appears when the author can extract meaning from the ordinary and everyday.
In a small group at the “Everyday Life as a Statement” photo workshop, we’ll talk about how photographs of kitchens, streets, shop windows, and the simplest subjects can be shaped into a meaningful series — something that communicates, expresses, and makes a statement.
Who it’s for:
— anyone interested in photography who wants to look at it more deeply
— those who want to shoot more expressively and consciously
— beginners and experienced photographers alike (and really, we’re all a bit photographers)
— those who want to put meaning into their images and build a story as a series
What’s included:
2 sessions: March 5 and 12 (Thursday)
Time: 10:30–12:30
Host: Alena Melenteva, photographer
Session 1:
- We’ll get acquainted with the work of three photographers who radically changed the way we see “ordinary” photography and became key figures in color documentary / conceptual photography: William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, Martin Parr
- We’ll discuss and break down their approaches with examples
-You’ll get a homework assignment: to reinforce the ideas, shoot a mini-series of 6–8 images in the logic of one chosen author (a phone camera is enough)
Session 2:
A gentle critique of your series: what works, where the series holds together, and where it can be strengthened. We’ll also look at more authors to widen your “optics.”
Fee: €30 — both sessions / €20 — one session
