Mankind's Folly, the award-winning documentary by Yorgos Avgeropoulos, screens at Pantheon Theater in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 16 and 17 April 2026 at 20:30. The film runs for 83 minutes and is rated 15+. It was awarded a Special Commendation at Prix Europa 2025 in Berlin in the Documentary category.
On opposite sides of the Bering Strait, Nikita in Eastern Siberia and Martha in Northern Alaska watch their worlds crumble. The permafrost — ground frozen for millennia, sealing within it the era of the mammoths — is now thawing at an unprecedented rate, swallowing homes, infrastructure, settlements, and entire cities. But the crisis is not local: as the frozen ground thaws, it releases vast quantities of carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, dramatically accelerating global warming.
Meanwhile, world leaders' commitments on climate are fading, lost amidst wars and economic pressures. "Energy security" has become the new priority, and drilling across the Arctic is expanding faster than ever. Scientists warn of tipping points and chain reactions that may soon become unstoppable — but their voices are drowned out by political and financial interests. The stories of Nikita and Martha are not two isolated tragedies. They are a final warning from the frozen North — for all of us.
The film is in English, Russian, and Yakut, with Greek and English subtitles. A SmallPlanet Productions film, co-produced with ARTE G.E.I.E. and ERT (Greece), with the participation of RTS (Switzerland).
