Varosha The Hostage City: Free Documentary in Nicosia

This special free screening of the award-winning documentary "Varosha, the Hostage City" (2024) takes place at Pantheon Theater in Nicosia, Cyprus, on Tuesday 28 April 2026 at 20:00. Directed by Sylvie Deleule, the film was awarded Best Documentary at the Ciné Paris Film Festival in September 2025. The event is held under the auspices of the Municipality of Famagusta.

Once one of the Mediterranean's most glamorous seaside resorts in the late 1960s, Varosha has spent the last 50 years as a ghost town frozen in time under the control of the Turkish army. Through intimate encounters with individuals from both sides of the Green Line, Deleule explores the emotional reality of a divided island — characters fighting to preserve a disappearing memory and those striving for reconciliation. At its core, the film poses a universal and piercing question: how do you build a life for yourself and your children while being deprived of part of your history?

Sylvie Deleule is an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker with a background in urban sociology and journalism. Her work spans historical, environmental, and human-centric investigations, and has received awards at major international festivals including IFF Ekotopfilm and the Grand Prix International du Film d'Environnement.
