This workshop is based on Nurtane Karagil’s installation “Unpacking the Inherited / A Participatory Installation on the Myths and Rumors of Cyprus”.
The installation invites visitors to share, in brief form—through words, phrases, key concepts, or drawings—the myths, perceptions, rumors, and stories about Cyprus that they are familiar with or that come to mind.
Cyprus, like many societies, has been shaped by a complex political history, which is why there are numerous narratives here—often contradictory, ambiguous, and dependent on perspective. Stories passed down from generation to generation are constantly reinterpreted in the context of contemporary events, while much remains unspoken, hidden, or undefined.
About the workshop: Participants will have the opportunity to work with notes and fragments collected during the exhibition, supplement them with their own experiences, and develop them further. Through collective discussion, personal and shared stories, narratives, rumors, and stereotypes associated with Cyprus will be explored.
In conclusion, participants will create letters in the “To Whom It May Concern” format, using text, drawing, and collage.
Cyprus will serve as a starting point, but the works may extend beyond its borders—toward more universal or even imaginary scenarios: what kind of shared future we want to see, what an ideal island might look like, and what values will shape it.
In the spirit of the exhibition’s title—let your imagination and hope run free. Participants’ works will become part of the installation and will be on display throughout the exhibition.
Participation is free. Registration: kultur-nikosia@goethe.de
