Following successful performances in Athens and a warm reception from audiences and critics alike, the play “Oedipus Rex,” directed by Sofia Antoniou, is coming to the Rialto Theater.
This is a modern adaptation of Sophocles’ tragedy, presented as a monologue, transforming the ancient myth into an intimate journey in search of identity and truth. At its center is a man navigating a fluid, unstable world, confronting trauma and his origins in an attempt to understand who he truly is.
The production’s key figure is Harry Charalambous-Kazepis, whose performance was honored with the “Best Actor in a Greek Play” award at the 2024/25 Karlos Koun Awards, held at the Olympia Theatre – Maria Callas Municipal Music Theatre with the support of the City of Athens and the Association of Greek Theater and Music Critics.
A native of Limassol, the actor returns to his hometown with this production, creating a profound poetic resonance with the myth itself. Just as Oedipus searches for his roots and identity, the play symbolically returns to its point of origin. Charalambos Kazepis is one of the most versatile figures of his generation, combining theatrical training, musical education, and technical expertise. He graduated with honors from the Georgios Armenis New Greek School of Drama, holds a degree in voice from the Greek Conservatory, and studied at the National Technical University of Athens. His career includes collaborations with leading institutions such as the National Theatre of Greece, the Athens and Epidaurus Festival, Onassis Stegi, and the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, as well as work as an acting instructor and director. His film credits include a role in El Greco.
In “Oedipus Rex,” he takes on an extremely challenging artistic task, embodying all the characters of the tragedy and creating a unified, multi-layered stage world. His performance is both a narrative and a confession, drawing the audience into a theatrical experience of rare intimacy.
Music by Ecati and set design by Marilena Kalaitzantonaki create an immersive environment where word, body, and sound coexist organically, amplifying the dramatic impact.
This is a deeply introspective production that transposes the story of Oedipus into the present day as a profoundly human tale of truth, responsibility, and the unchanging need to see ourselves clearly.
