The Stranger: François Ozon's Camus Adaptation at Pantheon Cinema

The Stranger (L'Étranger) is a landmark arthouse film screening in Nicosia, Cyprus at Pantheon Cinema from 4 to 10 July 2026. Directed by François Ozon and based on Albert Camus' iconic 1942 novel, this black-and-white drama blends existential reflection, crime, and courtroom tension into a visually striking cinematic experience. The film was officially selected in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival (2025), where it was nominated for the Golden Lion.

Set in Algiers in 1938, the film follows Meursault — a quiet, seemingly indifferent clerk in his thirties — whose emotionless reaction to his mother's death sets in motion a chain of events culminating in a tragic act on a sun-scorched beach and a trial that puts his entire being on judgment. Benjamin Voisin delivers a performance of silence and restrained intensity in the lead role, with Rebecca Marder bringing vitality and sensuality as Marie. Pierre Lottin plays Raymond Sintès with a magnetic yet menacing energy, while Denis Lavant (Salamano) and Swann Arlaud (the Priest) round out an exceptional cast of both established Ozon collaborators and rising stars of French cinema.

Ozon's adaptation — the first French-language film version of the novel — was approved and supported by Catherine Camus, daughter of the author, who read the screenplay and contributed contextual insight into the circumstances of the work's creation. The film shoot took place in Morocco, with Tangier standing in for Algiers, and features a score by composer Fatima Al Qadiri. At the 51st César Awards, Pierre Lottin won Best Supporting Actor for his role.
