Carob Festival

The carob harvest season starts in September and locals cannot but celebrate this special product, also known as the “Black Gold of Cyprus”. Carob trees have been growing on the island since the Neolithic era (7000-3000BC). Carobs and their numerous by-products are found in abundance on the island, and we are happy to benefit from their valuable nutritional impact daily.
Pegeia Municipality is celebrating our Black Gold at its Carob Festival! The picturesque location over the fishing shelter and the view of the breathtaking sunset are an extra incentive for you to attend this event, even if you have never tasted carob in your life! Walk around and learn about this versatile fruit with the numerous properties and uses.

At the festival you may also learn how to make trachanas (a thick soup based on a mixture of grain and fermented milk) and how to distill zivania (strong pomace drink).
If you are thinking that our festivals are only about food, read along! You will have a unique opportunity to observe handcrafters weaving reed baskets and decorating gourds. You will also enjoy a live concert of famous Greek singers and dance to traditional music along with local dance groups.
