Amalia Melancholia, Queen of the Palm Trees. A Play

What happens to a woman when her private life becomes a public matter and her own body becomes the subject of public discussion?

On 10 and 11 October, the production «Amalia Melancholia, Queen of the Palm Trees» will be presented in Nicosia - a profound and visually original staging about Greece's first queen, Amalia.

The young Amalia arrived in Greece in 1837, proclaimed queen at a very young age. She was expected not only to share her life with King Otto, but also to become a symbol of the new country. Yet what was expected of her above all was an heir.

The years passed, but no child came. The pressure on Amalia intensified: her health became the subject of medical experiments, her private life the object of public scrutiny, while her inability to become a mother gradually turned into a political problem.

Yet behind the image of the queen created for her by those around her was a real woman - with her own desires, her feelings, her loneliness and her love for Greece.

One of her most remarkable legacies was the National Garden, right in the centre of Athens. Amid the arid and harsh urban landscape, Amalia created a green oasis - a place that continues to thrive almost two centuries later.

This is precisely why the garden becomes a distinctive symbol in the production. If Amalia was unable to become a mother in the traditional sense, she created something else - a space that grows, changes and continues to exist after her.

The production is based on 887 letters from Amalia to her father, historical documents and archival material. Here, theatre is combined with movement, music, visual arts and poetry, transforming the queen's story into an emotional journey through time.

«Amalia Melancholia» is not merely a historical production. It is the story of a woman whose body others tried to control, of motherhood and the social expectations that accompany it, of power, loneliness, and what a person is capable of creating even when life deprives them of what they desired more than anything else.
