Exhibition of contemporary ceramic sculpture

The exhibition ‘Carriers’, a solo project by the artist Hannah Rowan, opens on Friday 18 September and will run until 17 October 2026 at The Edit Gallery in Limassol.
On the opening day, 18 September, guests are invited to the opening reception from 18:30 to 21:30.

At the heart of the ‘Carriers’ concept lies an exploration of the profound connection between the human body and the living natural world that surrounds it. All the clay sculptures on display were created by Hannah Rowan during her artist-in-residence programme in Limassol.

Drawing inspiration from the themes of pregnancy, motherhood and breastfeeding, the artist intertwines the contours of the human body with botanical and marine forms. For example, ceramic ribs merge into aloe vera leaves, milk ducts blossom like buds, and the structure of the placenta resembles plant roots and the nervous system.
The sculptures’ forms are reminiscent of protective armour or corsets moulded around a woman’s body; however, the material itself—fragile fired clay—emphasises the vulnerability of life.
The shimmering shell-like glazes evoke oysters, whose shells absorb and retain the trace elements of the waters in which they grew.
