    About This Event

In late October, the small and picturesque village of Agios Dimitrios, nestled among the lush slopes of the Marathasa Valley in the Troodos Mountains, invites you to its annual Festival of Traditions and Culture.
The celebration is held in honour of the village's patron saint, Saint Demetrius, whose feast day is celebrated on 26 October. The traditional religious celebration is combined with a rich cultural programme dedicated to Cyprus's heritage and authentic traditions.

The famous red clay of Agios Dimitrios holds a special place at the festival. Local pottery is an ancient craft included in UNESCO's National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Visitors will have the opportunity to see how artisans work with clay, learn about traditional techniques and watch items being created on the potter's wheel.

Here, they will be able to see a wide variety of traditional pottery items - from flowerpots and special baking vessels to beehives and small containers for storing milk.

The celebration would not be complete without traditional Cypriot cuisine. Visitors will be shown how palouzes - a soft dessert made from grape juice and flour - and trachanas - a thick soup made from cereals and fermented milk - are prepared, as well as the traditional process of producing zivania - a strong drink made from grape pomace.

At the festival, you will be able to taste dishes and homemade treats, buy local products and fruit grown in the South Marathasa area, and discover the culinary traditions of Cyprus's mountain villages.

To complete your introduction to local culture, you can head straight to the dance floor and join traditional Cypriot dances to the sounds of live music.

This is an excellent opportunity to visit Troodos, stroll through a welcoming mountain village and spend the day in an atmosphere of authentic Cypriot celebration, where traditional crafts, music, dance and gastronomy come together in one great tradition.
