Corfu Wind Band Concert - From West to East

Experience the sound of more than 100 musicians in the heart of Nicosia as the historic Philharmonic Society of Corfu brings its celebrated wind band to Eleftheria Square. Corfu–Cyprus: From West to East offers an evening of orchestral colour, expressive singing and Greek musical heritage, with free admission.

Known as the “Old Philharmonic”, the Society was founded in 1840 with the ambition of making music education accessible beyond social and financial boundaries. Generations of musicians have passed through its schools. Its first artistic director, Nikolaos Mantzaros, composed the music that became the national anthem of Greece and Cyprus — a connection that gives this October 28 performance particular resonance.

The programme journeys from the Ionian Islands to the wider world of Greek song. Works by Corfiot composers, including Mantzaros and Spyridon Samaras, lead into music by Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Hadjidakis, Mimis Plessas and other influential composers. A tribute to the October 28 anniversary completes the programme.

Conducted by Spyros Prosoparis, the ensemble is joined by soprano Elena Kelessidi, George Davlas and Cypriot tenor Ioannis Livanos. Trombone and xylophone soloists add contrasting instrumental voices, while Athina Violari narrates the evening.

For listeners who enjoy powerful live ensembles, Greek melodies or an atmospheric evening outdoors, this is an opportunity to encounter almost two centuries of Corfiot musical tradition in a public city setting. You do not need specialist musical knowledge to enjoy the varied programme.
