About This Event
How do ideas developed a century ago connect with the way we design and build today? This evening of architecture talks at CYENS follows the journey from the Bauhaus workshop to contemporary digital practice, bringing together history, craftsmanship and technology.
The occasion is the centenary of the Bauhaus building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius and inaugurated in 1926. Its striking glass-and-steel workshop façade became an emblem of modern architecture. Behind that architecture lay an approach to making: different skills, materials and disciplines working towards a shared result.
Architect Karin Georgiades opens the evening with an introduction to the Bauhaus and its lasting influence. Professor Marios C. Phocas of the University of Cyprus then presents “From the Bauhaus Workshop to Today’s Digital Workshop”, examining how computer-aided design and automated fabrication create new possibilities for collaboration. His expertise in architectural technology, structural design and transformable structures brings a contemporary perspective to the discussion.
The event is a good fit for people interested in architecture, design and the relationship between creative ideas and practical making. Students and professionals can connect historical approaches with current tools, while curious visitors can discover why the Bauhaus remains relevant.
Organised by the Cyprus-German Cultural Association as part of the Weeks of the German Language, the evening concludes with audience questions and a reception hosted by the German Embassy.
