Twelfth Night - Evelyn Anastasiou

What connects the dazzling world of a classic film musical with the rebellious energy of a punk concert? In Twelfth Night, Limassol-born artist Evelyn Anastasiou brings these contrasting worlds together, exploring how music gives people a shared voice, challenges conventions and opens up different ways of being together.

The project takes its title from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, a play of disguises, mistaken identities and temporarily overturned hierarchies. Anastasiou carries that spirit into contemporary art: familiar spaces take on new roles, while the boundaries between an exhibition, a stage and a public gathering become less fixed.

At the heart of the project is a fascinating contrast. Post-war musicals turn anxiety into singing, dancing and collective spectacle; punk confronts uncomfortable realities through noise, directness and a do-it-yourself approach. Music connects both worlds, becoming a way to imagine freedom and respond to the pressures of the present.

On opening night, visitors are invited to move freely between Pattihio Municipal Theatre, its courtyard and The Edit Gallery opposite. A central part of the evening is the first Cyprus appearance of HAUTAUSTOIMISTO, a hardcore punk ’n’ roll band from Tampere, Finland. Their performance brings a living music scene into the artistic project, connecting the exhibition with the energy of a live encounter.

This collaboration grows out of Anastasiou’s long-standing research into Finnish punk culture, particularly the independent Puntala-Rock festival. Her wider practice spans printmaking, photography and performance, often drawing unexpected connections between musical traditions. She studied fine art in Montpellier and received the Res Artis award when representing Cyprus at the 2009 Biennial of Young Artists from Europe and the Mediterranean.

Presented in collaboration with Pattihio Municipal Theatre, Limassol Municipality and The Edit Gallery, Twelfth Night will appeal to visitors curious about contemporary art, alternative music and cultural experiences beyond the usual gallery visit.

Opening: 24 October 2026, 18:30–22:00, with HAUTAUSTOIMISTO performing in the theatre courtyard at 20:00. The exhibition continues at The Edit Gallery until 14 November. Gallery hours after the opening: Wednesday–Friday 15:00–19:00; Saturday 10:00–13:00; Monday and Tuesday by appointment. Admission is free. The theatre and gallery are directly opposite each other.
