The Dream of a Ridiculous Man

"The Dream of a Ridiculous Man", one of the most concentrated philosophical short stories by Fyodor Dostoevsky, is presented by the Theatre "Stagones Zois" on 30 and 31 October in Nicosia, directed by Takis Christofakis.

Written in 1877, the emblematic work follows an anonymous hero who considers himself ridiculous and has concluded that nothing matters. While he has decided to end his life, his encounter with a little girl who asks for his help disrupts his absolute indifference. Later, a dream transports him to another world, where people live in harmony, without the mistrust and corruption that characterize human society.

This ideal state, however, does not last. The hero becomes a witness to the gradual deterioration of this world and is confronted with his own responsibility. When he wakes up, the experience has overturned his perception of existence and has led him to a new mission: to convey to others the conviction that love and genuine relationship with one's fellow human being can change life.

Dostoevsky thus composes a story that moves between despair and hope, raising questions about nihilism, human responsibility, the possibility of moral regeneration, and the distance between the world as it is and the world as it could be. The dream does not function merely as an escape from reality, but as an occasion for the hero to re-examine his place within it.

The direction and adaptation of the performance are by Takis Christofakis, while the monologue is performed by Vasilis Lavrikof. Marie Tzagkikian Ioannou takes part in the performance and is responsible for the movement and choreography. Lighting and sound are by Andreas Karseras.
