The Bald Soprano

The amateur theatre group «Δώδεκα και κάτι» presents one of the most iconic works of the Theatre of the Absurd, Eugène Ionesco's «The Bald Soprano», in four performances at ARTOS HOUSE in Nicosia, on 30 and 31 October and 1 and 4 November 2026, at 8:00 PM.

This production is participating in the 39th Amateur Theatre Festival of the Cyprus Theatre Organisation (THOK).

Written in 1950, «The Bald Soprano» is one of the works that defined the Theatre of the Absurd and established Eugène Ionesco as one of the most important figures of modern European theatre.

In an apparently ordinary urban drawing room, everyday conversations, social conventions and clichés gradually lose their logical coherence. Words detach from their meaning, communication breaks down, and the familiar turns into the absurd, revealing with humour and sharpness how difficult it is for people to truly communicate. Through the subversion of language and the conventions of everyday life, Ionesco creates a biting satire of social conformity and the mechanical nature of human communication, in a work that, more than 75 years after it was written, remains strikingly relevant.
