The Fifth Step, the critically acclaimed NT Live production filmed live from London's West End, screens at Rialto Theatre in Limassol, Cyprus on Friday 6 November 2026. This darkly funny and emotionally charged two-hander brings together two award-winning performers in a provocative new play by David Ireland, with Greek and English subtitles.
Olivier Award-winner Jack Lowden (Slow Horses, Dunkirk) stars as Luka, alongside Emmy and BAFTA-winner Martin Freeman (The Responder, Sherlock) as James. After years in the 12-step programme of Alcoholics Anonymous, James becomes a sponsor to newcomer Luka. The pair bond over black coffee, trade stories and build a fragile friendship out of their shared experiences. But as Luka approaches step five — the moment of confession — dangerous truths emerge, threatening the trust on which both of their recoveries depend.
Directed by Finn den Hertog, this is the first National Theatre of Scotland production to be filmed for NT Live, captured live at @sohoplace in London's West End.
