Directed by Natja Brunckhorst, the film is inspired by true events surrounding German reunification. As part of the currency union of 1990, hundreds of millions of GDR-Marks were secretly stored underground in the city of Halberstadt — nearly 400 tons of banknotes. To this day, no one knows exactly how much was taken. Brunckhorst uses this extraordinary historical footnote as the springboard for a warm, witty and surprisingly moving story.

Set in the summer of 1990, lifelong friends Maren (Sandra Hüller), Robert (Max Riemelt) and Volker (Ronald Zehrfeld) stumble upon the hidden stash and — together with their neighbours — devise a clever scheme to exchange the now-worthless currency for real goods. 🎭 What begins as an adventure becomes a defining chapter in their lives: a love-and-friendship comedy about money, justice, and a summer when everything still felt possible.

The screening is part of the Weeks of the German Language initiative, organised by the embassies of Austria, Germany, and Switzerland together with the Goethe-Institut Cyprus, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth. Special thanks go to the Friends of Cinema Society and the Charles Haimoff Fondation.
