    About This Event

First Encounters is a film education program by STYX Film Encounters, with film screenings and creative workshops for children at Θέατρο Πάνθεον, Nicosia, from 7 November to 12 December 2026.

Film screenings and workshops for children at Θέατρο Πάνθεον, 17 October - 19 December 2026.

STYX Film Encounters presents First Encounters, a new film education program for children. From 17 October to 19 December, across six Saturdays, Θέατρο Πάνθεον hosts three film screenings and three two-hour creative workshops.

The purpose of the program is educational. Children learn what cinema is and how a film is made, but above all they learn to watch critically. In an age when screens and content are everywhere, First Encounters invites children to understand what lies behind their screens: how what they see is made, how it can change, and how it can affect us.

The screenings and workshops are independent of each other. Children can attend only the screenings, only the workshops, or both.

    Screenings - for all ages

    Θέατρο Πάνθεον

    Hugo (Martin Scorsese, 2011) - Saturday 17 October, 15:00

A boy living hidden in a Paris train station discovers the story of Georges Méliès, one of the first magicians of cinema. A film about the birth of cinema, and that is why it is the natural starting point of the program.

Toy Story (John Lasseter, 1995) - Saturday 14 November, 15:00

The first full-length animated feature film made entirely on computers. Thirty years later, it remains a turning point in the history of animation and a story about friendship and jealousy that speaks to every age.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Tim Burton, 2005) - Saturday 12 December, 17:30

Tim Burton's adaptation of Roald Dahl's book, with the director's distinctive visual world.

Workshops - for children aged 7 to 10

    Θέατρο Πάνθεον

What is cinema? - Saturday 7 November, 15:00-17:00

From the camera to the edit: children discover how a film is made and what happens behind what we see on the screen.

How do films guide emotions? - Saturday 28 November, 17:30-19:30

Music, color, framing and rhythm: how filmmakers make us feel fear, joy or emotion, and how we can recognize it.

Stories in different media - Saturday 12 December, 17:30-19:30

What is kept and what changes when a story passes through different narrative media? Starting from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, children compare the book with the screen. No need to have seen the screening.

The aim of the workshops is for children to move from viewers to active thinkers who understand what they see.

    What is STYX Film Encounters?

STYX Film Encounters is an initiative dedicated to cultivating film education and culture through curated screenings, offering a shared home to young and old film lovers in Nicosia. Our goal is to present landmark films that stimulate not only the senses but also the mind. As the collective experience of cinema faces an existential threat from passive consumption via streaming platforms, STYX seeks to restore and safeguard the cinematic experience.

Drawing on the rich film heritage of the world, we aim to create spaces open to everyone, where people can come into deeper contact with cinema. Classic films do not belong only to the past - cinema has always pushed boundaries, provoked thought, and brought to light truths about human nature. These truths retain their power over time and deserve to be experienced as they were intended: in a shared space, on the big screen.
