Maria Farantouri

Maria Farantouri (born 1947) is a Greek singer and one of the most celebrated voices in modern Greek music. She is best known as the interpreter of Mikis Theodorakis's compositions, including "Epitaphios" and "Mauthausen Cantata", which she performed around the world in protest of the Greek military junta in the 1960s and 70s. Her warm, authoritative contralto voice and political engagement made her a symbol of Greek culture and resistance.
