Magical Night: Farantouri & Theodorakis in Nicosia 2026

Event ended 4 months ago
Venue: Theatro Pallas, Nicosia
About This Event
A brilliant tribute to the work of Mikis Theodorakis, a magical night: Maria Farantouri - the iconic interpreter of the great Greek composer - joins the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra under the baton of its new Artistic Director, the internationally acclaimed conductor Myron Michailidis.
The profound expressiveness and inner intensity of Maria Farantouri’s voice brings to life emblematic songs by Mikis Theodorakis, including his last song cycle Odyssey (2007, poetry by Kostas Kartelias), in refined orchestrations by Antonis Sousamoglou and Lazaros Tsavdaridis.
The evening is further enriched by the symphonic ballet suite The Carnival (1953), a work that vividly reflects Theodorakis’ creative assimilation and transformation of Greek popular music into symphonic form. With its strong theatrical and festive character, the music draws on popular melodies and folk dances, imaginatively orchestrated.
Do not miss this unique celebration of the music of Mikis Theodorakis, brought to life through the distinctive artistry of Maria Farantouri.
The concerts are held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026.

About the Artists (2)
Maria FarantouriMaria Farantouri (born 1947) is a Greek singer and one of the most celebrated voices in modern Greek music. She is best known as the interpreter of Mikis Theodorakis's compositions, including "Epitaphios" and "Mauthausen Cantata", which she performed around the world in protest of the Greek military junta in the 1960s and 70s. Her warm, authoritative contralto voice and political engagement made her a symbol of Greek culture and resistance.
