About This Event
AfuriKo is an Afro-jazz duo that explores the fascinating intersection of jazz improvisation and the cosmic rhythms of African drums—like a griot walking a tightrope.
The ancient voice of the djembe intertwines organically with the modern harmonies of the piano, creating a vivid and expressive musical dialogue.
The name AfuriKo comes from the Japanese “Afurika” (Africa) and the suffix “-ko” (“child”).
The duo consists of:
- Akiko Horii — percussion
- Jim Fannell — piano and keyboards
The musicians create a vibrant hybrid sound where the freedom of jazz is infused with the powerful and structured energy of African rhythms. On stage, their special connection unfolds naturally—ancient rhythmic stories meet contemporary harmony.
