Lysistrate by Aristophanes

The long-standing wartime situation in which the country finds itself has resulted in an extreme institutional crisis. The monstrous reality presents Lysistrate as an antidote to the tragedy of tangible history.

Various dichotomies clash — gender, class, political, cultural — with the main demand being the optimistic prospect of universal peace. Lysistrate leads through Aristophanic poetry, following a positive method of confronting reality.

She presents the blessing of peace so that the people may desire it and therefore proposes that the women abstain from love. The intense desire for bodily union and erotic encounter can bring reconciliation and peace.

She convinces women across Greece and they swear an oath of abstinence with the aim of nationwide pacification. The sexes oppose one another, fight, are tormented, theatrically and musically, in order to cooperate, “...peace is the concern, Aphrodite's will...”.
