The Stranger (L'Étranger), François Ozon's bold cinematic adaptation of Albert Camus' iconic 1942 novel, screens in Nicosia, Cyprus at Pantheon Cinema from 11 to 16 September 2026. This acclaimed drama-crime film was an Official Selection in Competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival 2025, and went on to win the Lumières Award for Best Actor (Benjamin Voisin) and Best Cinematography.

Set in Algiers, 1938, the story follows Meursault — a quiet, unremarkable clerk in his thirties — who buries his mother without showing a trace of emotion, then plunges back into daily life with unsettling detachment. When his neighbour Raymond Sintès draws him into a web of murky events, a fateful day on a sun-scorched beach changes everything forever. Shot in striking black and white with a 4:3 aspect ratio, Ozon's film blends existential drama, crime thriller, and courtroom cinema into a minimalist yet deeply powerful whole. The adaptation was approved by Catherine Camus, the author's daughter, who also contributed contextual insights into the novel's origins.
