About This Event
On October 31, the Center for Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) in Nicosia will host an unusual educational program for children titled “A Journey Through Time.”
For an hour and a half, participants will feel as if they’re boarding a train and traveling back in time—to the era of British rule in Cyprus.
With the help of museum exhibits and a large interactive map, children will trace the routes of the Cyprus Government Railway, which once connected the island’s towns and villages.
During the program, the children will learn how the railroad operated, what role it played in Cyprus’s economic and social development, and what goods were transported across the island. They will also explore the history of ports, mines, and quarries and discover why the railroad service eventually ceased operations.
The program is based on observation, research, and hands-on activities, so children will not only hear historical facts but will also independently explore Cyprus’s past through museum exhibits.
Special attention will be given to key events in the island’s modern history, the period of British colonial rule, and Cyprus’s struggle for independence.
