Tracing Angel's Men - exhibition

In 1949, American anthropologist John Lawrence Angel studied residents of Episkopi, recording their physical characteristics as part of his research into Cyprus’s population history. Decades later, artist Theopisti Stylianou-Lambert follows those records back to the people whose lives extended far beyond the measurements.

Tracing Angel’s Men brings together four interconnected works developed through archival research and encounters with the participants’ descendants. Photographs held at the Smithsonian Institution meet images from family albums and stories of everyday life. Visitors can browse the expanded archive, discovering the relationships and memories that scientific records left largely outside the frame.

Elsewhere, the exhibition takes an unexpected turn. Using artificial intelligence, Stylianou-Lambert transforms recorded foot measurements into butterfly-like images displayed in specimen boxes. View-Masters offer an imagined reconstruction of the measurement process, while another work draws out the personal exchanges within the researchers’ correspondence. These shifts between evidence and invention invite a closer look at how people become classified, documented and remembered.

Curated by Alessandro Cazzola, the exhibition runs from 10 October to 19 December 2026 at Pylon Art & Culture, 1A Athinon Street, Limassol. Opening hours are Thursday and Friday, 17:00–20:00, and Saturday, 11:00–13:00.
