Making Carob Molasses & Carob Cookies

Learn the traditional Cypriot craft of making carob molasses and carob cookies in this free workshop. Discover authentic culinary traditions as part of the "Heartland of Legends" experiential workshops program.

As the proverb says: "Learn a craft and set it aside, and if you hunger, seize it" - wisdom from folk tradition encouraging us to develop skills and creativity. The residents of villages along the "Heartland of Legends" route were primarily farmers and shepherds, but they also mastered crafts. They needed to be creative and multi-talented to supplement their income during difficult times.

Men and women learned to create useful and beautiful objects. Crafts such as basketweaving, icon painting, silversmithing, woodcarving, pottery, mosaic work, embroidery, winemaking, the preparation of famous Commandaria wine, and many others provided rural residents with additional income. All these crafts are today part of Cyprus's Intangible Cultural Heritage, and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism has developed a program offering visitors and locals the opportunity to participate in experiential workshops.

Experience the joy of creation with your own hands:

• Feel the clay slip between your fingers to create pottery objects
• Learn to use the chisel to carve your own woodwork
• Take needle and thread to create Lefkara embroidery
• Sit at a loom to weave Phytkiotika fabrics
• Discover new experiences along the "Heartland of Legends" route

All workshops are free. Experiential workshops run from May through November 2026 and are open to visitors on Wednesdays, weekends, and public holidays. Participation requires advance booking - contact the organizer directly for details. Workshops also take place in Christmas villages during the holiday season.
