- Lecture: How New Words Are Born, Why Some Catch On And Others Don't

New words—neologisms—are constantly appearing in the Russian language. They are formed from original sources or borrowed from other languages. Every year, linguists record over a hundred innovations, adding them to special lists.
Proponents of language purity believe that borrowings should be combated and even banned by law. But is the Russian language actually being corrupted by borrowings? In this lecture, we'll discuss how language changes and expands, and why some words remain while others don't.
We'll also have a short quiz!
Speaker:
Ksenia Demeneva, PhD in Philology, children's writer.
