The film “Beyond the Blue Border” is a German drama directed by Sara Neumann, based on the novel of the same name by Dorit Linke.
The film tells the story of two 15-year-old teenagers in the GDR in August 1989 who decide to make a dangerous escape by swimming 50 kilometers across the open Baltic Sea.
The events unfold on the eve of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Two best friends, Hanna and Andreas, find themselves under surveillance by the secret police (the Stasi). They are barred from pursuing the education and careers they’ve dreamed of, which drives them to take a desperate step. Their path to freedom is an exhausting and dangerous swim across the Baltic Sea.
During this long and arduous journey, they are bound together by nothing more than a single rope, and their very lives hang in the balance.
