About This Event
On October 21, the Goethe-Institut Cyprus in Nicosia will host a free screening of Sven Halfar’s German documentary Heaven Can Wait — We Live Now (Heaven Can Wait — Wir leben jetzt).
The film centers on an unusual choir from Hamburg, whose members are all over 70 years old. Despite their age, they continue to actively engage in music, rehearse, perform, and discover new aspects of life.
The film portrays the choir members not through the lens of age or limitations, but as people with their own dreams, memories, fears, joys, and desires. For them, singing becomes not just a hobby, but a way to connect with others, feel part of a community, cope with change, and remain open to new experiences.
The film’s title reflects its central theme: life does not end with age. The film’s protagonists prove that even after turning 70, it is possible to fall in love, make friends, dream, take the stage, and joyfully try things you’ve never done before.
A discussion in English will follow the screening. Participants will include music therapist and performer Andri Irakleus and film scholar Olga Kurelu. The conversation will focus on the role of music and singing in people’s lives, emotional well-being, resilience, and how creativity helps us stay connected to ourselves and those around us.
