Salonica View Tourist Office organizes a one-day excursion and hiking experience at Avakas Gorge, one of the most impressive natural landmarks in Cyprus.
Avakas Gorge is considered one of the most beautiful destinations for hikers and nature lovers and is often described as the jewel of the Akamas Peninsula.
The carved limestone cliffs rising up to 30 meters, the rich wildlife along the trail, and the Avgas River flowing through the gorge create the feeling of a natural paradise.
The Avakas Gorge trail is located within the Pegeia Forest area, with the route ending inside the gorge itself. The trail follows the course of the Avgas River, from which the gorge takes its name.
The gorge was formed through continuous erosion of inclined limestone rocks consisting of fertile powdery soil, coral limestone, granular limestone, and bentonite clay. The area is also part of the NATURA 2000 protected network.
The trail initially follows a dirt road (closed to private vehicles) through an open valley and then leads into the gorge. The final section passes through the riverbed, where water usually flows throughout the year. Dense vegetation and the shaded, humid environment create a unique and highly attractive natural setting.
