12 Free Things to Do in Cyprus This Week (Nov 2-8)

Pelendri hands its village centre over to zivania for two days, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November, with free entry on both. You can watch the time-honoured distilling of Cyprus's grape-based spirit, see grape harvest reenactments and grape stomping, and browse a local market. Traditional music and dancing fill the streets. Sample the zivania and pair it with hiromeri, lountza and Cypriot sausages.

Archive footage, photographs and readings build a portrait of Elfriede Jelinek, the Austrian Nobel laureate, in this documentary. Sandra Hüller and Stefanie Reinsperger give voice to her writing. The film won the German and Austrian awards for best documentary in 2023, and this screening marks Jelinek's 80th birthday and opens the Weeks of the German Language.

Larnaka's seafront, old streets and craft quarter join up on this walk with a licensed guide. You pass the fort and mosque, follow Piale Pasha into the Art Workshops Neighbourhood where craftspeople work, and see Saint Lazarus Church before finishing at the Municipal Market. Guiding is free, while museum entry and drinks are extra. Wear comfortable shoes for about 2½ to 3 hours.

Musicians from Cyprus, Germany and Austria each play their own set, then all join for a shared finale. Monsieur Doumani take Cypriot traditions through psychedelic folk, jazz and rock. Berlin singer Erik Leuthäuser pairs jazz with dream pop and German-language vocals. A Linz duo adds bass, keyboards, electronics and vocals in three languages.

DJ Magic plays retro music as Kafeneio Xouzouri marks 15 years, with KEO beer, the venue's sponsor since day one, on hand. No reservations are taken for the party, so arrive early to get a spot. Entry is free for everyone, and the plan is simple: old songs and good company on a Friday in Limassol.

A free bus out of Kato Pafos links several museums in the Akamas, Laona region, with guidance in English and Greek. Food for every appetite, ice-cold beers and cocktails come with live DJ sets from morning into the afternoon. Brave palates can enter the Chilli Contest for the title of Chilli Champion.

Jungle and drum & bass fill Kala Kathoumena, ranging from classic jungle to heavier drum & bass. LOBNYA, CyFunk and Phat Finxxx play original music in a format built for coming straight from work and staying the whole session. It runs until 21:30, so you are home at a sensible hour.

Ayia Napa opens its Biennale, a dialogue between classical and contemporary art running until 29 January 2027. Artists from different countries show painting, watercolour, graphic art, photography and collage across the Thalassa Municipal Maritime Museum, the Georgios Seferis Cultural Center and the municipality. The organisers aim it at ordinary visitors as well as the professional art community.

Paragemosto, a traditional dish of lamb and rice, is handed out free at the fourth festival in its honour in Orounta. Stalls also serve souvlaki, warm trachanas, bourekia, loukoumades and crêpes, and you can browse traditional and handmade products between plates. Giorgos Stamataris and Flora Konstantinou play live music.

Children hear fairy tales read aloud in the Theatro Ena lobby by guests from public and cultural life, including TV host Andri Karantoni. The stories open up literature, fantasy and Cypriot traditions for young listeners. Readings are in Greek, and you need to register by phone in advance.
