Zorba the Greek: A Legendary Ballet by the Sofia National Opera and Ballet

“A man needs at least a touch of madness—otherwise he’ll never break free.”

— Alexis Zorbas

Nikos Kazantzakis wrote a novel about a man who lives passionately, boisterously, and without looking back. Mikis Theodorakis set this story to music, creating a piece that has become one of the symbols of Greece. Lorka Myasin created a ballet that has toured more than 40 countries and attracted over three million viewers, and the final scene with Zorba’s dance by the sea has long been a symbol of freedom, recognized far beyond the borders of Greece.

In September 2025, Igor Tsvirko and Oleg Ivenko danced this ballet together for the first time in Cyprus, within the walls of Paphos Castle. The performance resonated deeply with the audience, and now the production returns to the island as part of the Larnaka Festival 2026.

In the leading roles:

Igor Tsvirko (Bolshoi Theatre)

Oleg Ivenko (Kazan Ballet)
